Nebraska Furniture Mart’s new Dallas expansion is poised to double the work force of this company. A decision to keep the corporate office and all central business functions located in Omaha created a need for a lot of new employees to be accommodated on the Omaha campus. KHA’s search of the surrounding locale found the 808 Building to be an ideal candidate.
The building was completely gutted for offices and meeting/training space for several of NFM’s IT and finance divisions. The central atrium was retained and re-sized to maximize the useable space. In all, 200 new employees use the building today. Easy access to the rest of the NFM campus and additional staff parking is provided by a new footbridge over the Papio Creek. This was arranged for in conjunction with the Papio NRD in order to replace an old railroad bridge which needed to be removed.
An interior décor which brings an uplifting spirit to the staff was desired. Colors and finishes with a bright, contemporary feel are used throughout. An emphasis is placed on vision and natural light, which is available to everyone in the building. The sky-lit atrium and a number of new windows provide abundant natural light and views. Glazed office and conference room walls share light from the exterior windows where the open office areas are located.
A central stair was added in the atrium to provide a virtual connection between the upper and lower floor. The atrium space is designed as an informal meeting space and is regularly used by the staff as they collaborate throughout the day.
